About this Cruise

To provide a rich insight into the Baltics’ diverse culture and unique history, this itinerary features visits to some of the most important countries, cities and sites in the region. At the heart of this itinerary is a visit to Sweden, an undoubted highlight; you'll get to experience scenic cruising between the craggy islands and islets of the sprawling Stockholm Archipelago, and discover the sights of Stockholm. See the Swedish capital’s number of historic and architectural highlights, such as the Royal Palace; visit the many museums; and perhaps take a boat trip on the picturesque canals. There’s also a visit to the beautiful island of Gotland for a glimpse into Sweden’s Hanseatic heritage in historic Visby.

There are memorable discoveries throughout this journey though; you’ll also get to take in the historical and cultural treasures of destinations in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania too. Explore Tallinn – the picturesque Estonian capital – to discover its former Soviet prison and UNESCO-listed Old Town, where medieval castles, cathedrals and churches await. On a tour you could visit Tallinn’s Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, learn of its history and even the bells in its iconic bell tower. You stop at the Latvian capital too, with time to visit the Museum of Occupations for an insight into what life was like here under Soviet and Nazi rule, see ‘Stalin’s birthday cake’ and the aviation museum in Riga, while the military town of Karosta is yours to explore during your visit to Liepaja in Latvia too. Speaking of Soviet sites, there are plenty to discover on the remote Estonian island of Saaremaa, which is also home to centuries-old monuments and landmarks such as the 14th century-built Kuressaare Castle, and in Klaipėda – Lithuania’s third-largest city – including Plokštinė missile base.

Situated on Latvia's beautiful west coast, Liepaja was once only a small fishing village, but now stands as it's country's third largest city and one of it's most prominent and commercially important.

Today the city is rich with commerce and culture, a thriving hub of arts, entertainment and fine local cuisine. There is something to suit all interests in Liepaja. Visit the Great Amber Concert Hall, to get a feel for the musical heritage, and perhaps catch a show; relax at the Olympic Centre, with its spas and pools; take in the architectural highlights and cultural sites, such as the magnificent Holy Trinity Cathedral; or even enjoy a taste of life 'in the great outdoors' here. You could relax at the beach, wander nearby nature trails, or opt for something even more adventurous, taking on activities at the Adventure Park.

No time in Liepaja is complete without a delve into the city's fascinating history. You can walk amongst the battlegrounds of the fight for Latvian independence, at centuries-old fortresses and batteries; take a look around the eerie halls and cells of the Soviet era Karosta Prison, the only military prison in Europe that is open to the public; and much more.

Saaremaa is the largest island in Estonia, and it retains much of the traditions in architecture, costumes and even the local dialect.

The only town is Kuressaare, where the 14th century bishop’s castle is among the best preserved medieval buildings in the Baltic. The beautiful and well preserved old town is also well worth exploring.

It’s said that Saaremaa is famous for windmills, black rye bread, and strong beer. Once every farm had its own mill, and although many have fallen into disuse, some are now being restored. The flour from the mills was once used for the many types of local bread, which is still made and enjoyed, as is the bottled beer from Saaremaa’s brewery – notably the strong Tehumardi and the Christmas beer that warms up winter evenings.

Tallinn, Estonia’s capital on the Baltic Sea, is unquestionably one of Europe's most magical capitals. This ancient Hanseatic city is justifiably proud of its beautiful churches, solid limestone houses and well-preserved cobbled streets.

Toompea Hill, with its medieval houses and alleyways, is the oldest part, and at its foot substantial remains of the city wall can still be seen, surrounded by well-maintained parks. The medieval town hall is one of the best preserved in northern Europe, and the weathercock, Gamle Toomas, is an enduring symbol of Tallinn.

The astonishing, ornate, 19th century Alexander Nevskij Cathedral was built when Estonia was part of Tsarist Russia. Kadriorg’s Castle was built by an earlier Tsar, Peter the Great, and now houses part of the Estonian Museum of Art. The “Peek into the Kitchen” tower has an exhibition of Tallinn’s military history.

Sweden’s beautiful capital owes much of its appeal to its unique location. Spread across 14 islands at the head of a vast archipelago that stretches out into the Baltic, Stockholm’s swathe of parks, gardens and canals are a joy to discover via the city’s large network of bridges.

Founded over 700 years ago, the city’s harbour is the epitome of elegance and Stockholm’s history is writ large across its wide boulevards. Gamla Stan, Stockholm's charming Old Town district, is home to historic, ochre-coloured buildings and monuments. Dating back to the 13th century, the island is surrounded by water and offers beautiful waterfront views. Along its divine cobbled streets, the 13th century Storkyrkan Cathedral, the gorgeous Riddarholm Church and the Nobel Prize Museum can all be found and appreciated.

The choice of museums is extensive and includes the Vasa Maritime Museum, the unique Skansen Open Air Museum and of course, the ABBA Museum. The stunning Royal Palace and the Drottningholm Palace are also well worth seeing.

The vibrant Norrmalm and Östermalm districts in the city centre are ideal for those looking for a more modern cultural experience. Here, an array of upmarket shops sell goods from globally-known brands, and there are trendy cafes next to the Science and Technology Museum. Stockholm’s beauty and fashion sense are legendary, and its no-fuss functional, minimalistic approach to style provides the city with an unmistakable look.

Located on the Swedish island of Gotland, the UNESCO World Heritage Town of Visby is one of the most remarkable in Scandinavia. Known for its incredible scenic beauty and stunning historic sites, this former Hanseatic City has to be seen to be truly appreciated.

The “City of Roses and Ruins” is like a living museum, and is renowned for its well-preserved medieval wall and defensive towers. Uncovering the 12th century Gunpowder Tower, Love Gate and Långa Lisa – the wall’s tallest tower, is highly recommended. Visby’s wonderful Old Town is home to 15 of Visby’s 17 medieval churches, and the Burmeister House – the town’s oldest merchant house – St. Mary’s Cathedral, and a beautiful botanical garden can also be found within its ancient walls. The main square, Stora Torget, has cobblestone streets lined with charming cafés and restaurants.

Eight hundred years have shaped the unique appearance and rich traditions of Latvia’s capital, Riga. The Gothic spires that dominate its skyline imply a sombre heart, but the rich Art Nouveau spirit of this diverse city, the largest of all three Baltic capitals, is a delight to discover.

Set at the mouth of the River Daugava, the cultural centre of Riga has been an important centre for trade and finance over the centuries, and boasts fine examples of architecture, museums and concert halls. The city’s modern urban structures blend seamlessly with medieval castles, churches and the wooden buildings of its medieval Old Town. The pedestrian-only Old Town – now a UNESCO World Heritage – has many shops and restaurants and is home to the bustling Livu Square.

Situated at the edge of the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon, and Lithuania’s only port city, Klaipeda is a place with connections to the sea at its very heart, the host of numerous summer sea festivals and a biennial tall ships regatta, and home to museums harbouring fascinating maritime-related tales.

But its not only Klaipeda’s seafaring heritage that distinguishes it from other Lithuanian cities. Ever since the city was established by the Teutonic Knights, it has stood out for its architecture and culture. And whilst much of Klaipeda was changed after World War II, under order of the Soviet regime or because existing buildings were destroyed in the war, there is still a wonderful collection of postcard-perfect half-timbered buildings – similar in style to those famously found in Germany and Denmark – to admire, and monuments such as the remains of the Memelberg Castle, which was built in the 13th century, and the maritime museum in Fort Wilhelm, built at the end of the 19th century.

Wander the old town and new town districts to see the striking contrast between past and present Klaipeda, and take in their many sights and highlights. Or perhaps venture out to revel in the beauty of the Curonian Spit National Park, or simply relax at the city’s beaches.
