Event Topic Introduction
Competitive bidding is an enjoyable aspect of bidding. It puts pressure on your opponents and takes up valuable bidding space. It requires judgement as to what level to stop bidding. This weekend is designed to improve that judgement.
We will firstly explore when to overcall and to what level. It will involve bidding to just compete but also how to inform partner when there is a possibility of a game on. We all want a good score and we explore when to bid aggressively and when to be cautious. The decision will involve when a hand has value for overcalling and when it is best as a defending hand.
The other aspect of competitive bidding is doubling. When there is a double at a low level it is asking partner to bid their best suit. The key to obtaining the right contract is in the response to partner’s double. It takes courage to give a jump response and we will explore how to make a judgement as to which level to respond. There will also be a discussion when to play your pass card to convert the takeout double to penalties.
By the end of the weekend hopefully you will be confident enough to compete more.
