Event Topic Introduction

Bidding 4-4-4-1 hands is a problem in any system. In Acol, opener’s re-bid describes their hand to their partner. If they re-bid a suit they are telling partner that they have 5+ cards in the first suit and 4+ cards in the second suit. If they re-bid NT they are telling their partner that they have a balanced hand. Therefore with a 4-4-4-1 hand you have to “lie” about your hand when making a rebid if partner responds in your suit with a singleton.

As always there are methods to help you make the best decision about a particular hand. How you “lie” will usually depend on the strength of your hand and you should choose different strategies for weak, intermediate and strong opening hands.

Over the weekend we will explore the best choice of opening bids with a 4-4-4-1 hand, the different strategies employed with hands of different strengths and how a 4-4-4-1 hand affects your actions further into the auction.
