The thought of declaring a 1NT contract sends many bridge players into a state of panic. It is very different to declaring a 3NT contract where top tricks and tempo are the key. When facing a 1NT contract top tricks are often scarce and the lead will have to be given up many times to establish the desired number of tricks. So, it presents a very different challenge.
Fortunately for declarer, there are a number of skills you can learn to enhance your play when declaring 1NT. Over the weekend we will explore the key skills of patience, encouraging/forcing the opponents to lead frozen suits, disguising the strength of your hand, ducking later and longer than you would in 3NT and settling for one or two off knowing that the opponents could score more if they had been declaring.
We will also be exploring the art of defending 1NT, which is arguably even more challenging than declaring 1NT. Again, the skills are very different to defending against 3NT. We will examine the importance of careful opening leads, avoiding leading frozen suits, accurate switching, planning for two suits and above all else being patient.
Hopefully, after the weekend you will return to your club with confidence and never groan again when your partner leaves you in 1NT!
