If you allow the opponents to have an uninterrupted bidding sequence, competent players will usually end in the right contract and you will probably be heading for a poor score on the board. Therefore, you should try and enter the bidding at every opportunity to try and disrupt the opponents, but as with most decisions in bridge, when and how to overcall is a challenge!
There are generally three reasons to overcall, to compete for the part-score hand, to get the defence off to a good start with the right lead or to set up a potential sacrifice. But there are good overcalls, risky overcalls and poor overcalls and the judgement of when to overcall, when to compete and when to sacrifice is difficult. We will be exploring these issues over the weekend.
There are different ways to support your partner when they have overcalled and it’s important to understand the options available to you. We will be looking at all of these in detail, so hopefully at the end of the weekend you will be confident in when and how to join in with your partner’s disruptive bidding.
